1. I've never been the kind of actress whose sole interest was sex appeal, so I think that earns you some longevity. And I like character parts. It's a lot more fun and you don't have to rely on being the taste of the moment. That level of fame is probably very difficult to deal with. People screaming your name in the streets, quite honestly, isn't an audience I'm desperate to capture. I'm lucky. The people who tell me they like my work tend to be the kind of people I might be friends with anyway. I have a really nice audience.
2. I don't think it's necessarily healthy to go into relationships as a needy person. Better to go in with a full deck.
3. There were many times when my father (John Huston) and I didn't agree, but we always became close again because I tended not to stand up to him for long. I seem to have been drawn to dominating men, like my father and Jack (Jack Nicholson).
4. I do like the ocean wave, actually. I'm born under the sign of Cancer - the sign of the crab - so I like coastal areas and sunny beaches and such - although not the wide-open and deep seas.
5. It was difficult directing myself. For a woman it's extra-hard because you have to spend an hour and a half in hair and make-up and you're late to set up shots and you're changing clothes in the street and there's no time to recover.
6. There were times when I hated my nose. But you grow up and you start to recognize that maybe it wasn't a bad thing that you weren't born Barbie.
7. Age is not enviable in America. It's not applauded all that strongly. You have to take it all with a grain of salt.
8. I think I'm basically a gypsy. You know, from modeling.
9. I've always thought with relationships, that it's more about what you bring to the table than what you're going to get from it. It's very nice if you sit down and the cake appears. But if you go to the table expecting cake, then it's not so good.
10. Going back to Ireland involves at least six to seven emotional breakdowns for me per day.
11. I am a person whose father had no religion but who went to the nuns for a couple of years. And I think I'm the same: On one hand, I pray; on the other hand, I don't believe. I am constantly between the two.
12. (on working with her father John Huston on Prizzi's Honor 1985) We had a great time on "Prizzi's Honor". My father is extremely easy to work with. He chooses his actors, places his confidence in them and lets you get on with it. He is living proof that a director doesn't have to run all over the place.
13. I have a very full life and I am very happy with where I am now. I don't want to change anything. I once wanted to have children and it was not my choice not to have children but it hasn't broken my heart that I haven't. I think unless you're truly, wholeheartedly prepared to make a full-time commitment, you have to really think about it. I certainly wouldn't adopt children just because everybody in show business seems to be doing it.
14. I don't see myself ever retiring, unless it's for something that I like better, and so far I like directing a lot but I don't see the necessity to retire from anything unless there's a really great alternative.
15. I was actually in my mid-30s when I got the Oscar. And yeah, it does kind of spoil you in terms of the kind of stuff you look for.
16. I like to dance. I probably would have been a dancer. I love music, it's good for the soul and dancing is good for people. I dance on my own, I go to classes, I have that sort of energy. I need to dance. People only need to dance to make them feel happy. What do I think of the Yankees? I'm sorry, I don't follow football.
17. I had one nanny who made me sit in front of a bowl of porridge for three or four days running when I refused to eat it. I remember being very unhappy about that.
18. I can't help feeling the world is on this terrible roller coaster where nobody can get it up since the atom bomb.
19. I have two new nephews and a new niece this year, so I have plenty of kids that I can spend time with.
20. I know certainly, when one job draws to a close, that I feel I'm simply never going to work again. No one will ever want me for anything ever again. I think that's a vulnerable moment in every actor's life, and it happens every time you finish a film.
21. I like it when you read a script and there's the part that you show to the other characters and then there's the part that only the audience knows.
22. I think all actors - they'll hate me for saying this - but we are babies. We like to be loved, and we'll do anything if we're loved.
23. I'm not really big on slapstick humor. I like gentle humor.
24. I think most actors like to be liked.
25. I'm very fond of doing movies where men fight over me. I don't get to do enough.
26. I'm not all that big on rides. I sort of like bumper cars but I don't really go to Disneyland all that much unless if have nieces and nephews or people to take.
27. It was great to work in Ireland because it's such a beautiful country, but it's not particularly easy to film in because the weather changes all the time.
28. It's still possible to find pockets of old Dublin - but its becoming more and more rarified.
29. My biggest ambition is never to be bored. I'm not aggressive enough to strongly run after being an actress.
30. Oh, all kinds of lunacy happens in Ireland, all kinds of lunacy.
31. Where there is age there is evolution, where there is life there is growth.
32. I was never happily hedonistic. There's no hedonism without a downside.
33. Some people had fathers who were bankers or farmers, my father made films, that's how I saw it. As for the movie stars, they were just around, some of them were friends, others weren't, it was all just a part of my everyday life.
34. Of course drugs were fun. And that's what's so stupid about anti-drug campaigns: they don't admit that. I can't say I feel particularly scarred or lessened by my experimentation with drugs. They've gotten a very bad name.
